Authentic Swahili. Handmade.

Our story

Jahazi Collective began with a journey, not a business plan.

The view through a pointed Swahili arch over palms, white rooftops and the water

How we started

Our founder travelled the Swahili Coast again and again, from the Lamu archipelago and Malindi to Mombasa, and across the water to Pemba and Zanzibar, drawn by its old towns, its carved doors and the quiet pride of its craftspeople. In workshops and courtyards, our founder met fundis shaping hardwood the way their teachers had taught them, and mothers in the Lamu archipelago stitching kofias by hand, one careful row at a time.

Those journeys also revealed a hard truth. The people keeping this heritage alive were not always paid what their work was worth.

Jahazi Collective was built to change that. We work directly with our artisans, credit every maker by name, and bring their work to your home through our online store. What began as one traveller's love for the coast has become a collective: many hands, one coast, one standard of craft.

Our promise

We believe every piece should have a maker, a place and a story. Every Jahazi piece has all three.

The Swahili Coast

The coast we come from.

Four dhows under sail at dusk on the Lamu channel
A shaded courtyard plunge pool with a built-in white seat under palm fronds
Clouds reflected in wet sand where the tide runs in
A coastal room with a planter's chair, a writing desk, carved shelves and an arched door to the balcony
A single dhow under full sail in soft evening light, mangroves behind
Two chairs on a terrace at dusk, looking out over the water
A long empty beach below sand dunes under a blue sky
A fleet of dhows with triangular sails heading out across the water at dusk
Small boats on still water under a fiery sunset

Lamu Old Town

Where the carving tradition lives on every street.

A dark hand-carved Lamu double door with a floral frame, a carved centre post and a brass lion-head knocker
The Lamu Museum: a coral-stone arcade and carved balcony, with an old cannon on the lawn
An old carved Swahili door with brass studs, two lion-head knockers and a chained hasp, in sepia
